But then, over a little crest, the burned out area appears and stretches for miles. The hills are blanketed in black and grey. Some trees are burned on just one side, the other green and healthy-looking. Grassy areas are burned out along the road in spots. In some areas, hot ash clearly jumped the road, starting small fires that didn’t spread. The fire line is clearly visible.
And yet, the coastal mountain wilderness that is Big Sur still stands in its majestic beauty.
As The Beau and I reached the burned out areas, The Grateful Dead’s Fire on the Mountain came up on his CD rotation.
